Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the Government of Ghana cannot trust itself to secure seized excavators from illegal mining popularly called Galamsey.

According to the lawmaker, based on Government’s own prior conduct, the Government has decided to burn excavators found around illegal mining sites instead of ceasing them.

In a tweet, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said;

“Our Govt cannot trust itself to secure seized excavators based on its own prior conduct so has decided this time to burn them regardless of environmental & legal consequences.

This same Govt expects all of us to trust them with all the natural resources & taxes in their care?”

BACKGROUND

The Government of Ghana has currently deployed soldiers to help fight illegal mining activities around the country’s water bodies.

During their operations, the soldiers are setting excavators and other mining equipment on fire as compared to last year’s operations during which the excavators were seized.

It could be recalled that the excavators that were seized around illegal mining sites became a topical issue after some of the earth moving vehicles got missing.
